Primary 6 Mushroom Project 2012

During the Spring Term the P6 class took part in a STEPS programme, Science and Technology Experts in Primary School.  Our Lady's and St. Mochua's was one of only fifteen schools throughout N.I. selected to take part in the STEPS programme.  The theme of the project was Mushrooms and was based around the visit to GHM, Gary Hughes Mushrooms and Hughes Mushrooms in Moy.

For the project the children were able to practise their scientific skills through the growing of mushrooms, investigating conditions for growth, building their own model mushroom house and investigating environmentally friendly methods of producing electricity.  The children thoroughly enjoyed the whole project which culminated in a PowerPoint Presentation, given by five of the pupils to an audience of scientists, other school children and experts in the field, on their project.  This was followed by a display of the project at Stormont where three children again presented the project to an audience which included some very famous MLAs.  Mitchel McLoughlin certainly went home a happy man, with a punnet of Hughes Mushrooms under his arm!

The Primary 6 class then showcased their work to their parents at a special open night held recently at the school.

Many thanks to Pauline and Gary Hughes, Laura and Eugene from Hughes in Moy and Sean Farrell and Mr. Farrell for helping with the construction of the mushroom houses.  Well done to all involved and especially the children who received very high praise from the scientists.
